Clatterbridge Cancer Hospital. Concrete, 1960
Clatterbridge Cancer research hospital in the 60s was a
leader in cancer research.
One method was the treatment of very sick patients in Cobalt Units -
these were cell-like boxes with massive concrete walls and ceilings to
screen against radiation - not pleasant places to be at all.

Figs 1 and 2 show the design drawing and the result of casting a relief
ceiling as a radiating design. The design could be illuminated from the
surrounding walls by changing coloured lights, which were controlled by
the patient. The relief glowed like an ever-changing butterfly wing! It
was a genuine attempt to calm the patient - and to give them some element
of control in a bizarre situation. |
