The window illustrated is an example of recycling. The
glass used is all from used bottles; beer, wine, lemonade and so on.
The resulting crushed glass, known as cullett, is all intermixed in a
gas-fired kiln, extruded from a tap into a prepared channel, and whilst
still molten, impressed with various 'branding irons' to give textured
bars 50 mms wide and 200mm long, which can be slotted into parallel
vertical channels (see illustration)
The result, when installed in an oriel type window, gives a rich glow
of variegated light and the textures ripple patterns of light on the
surrounding surfaces. |
